When using email, the term "whitelist" is used to describe an approved list of emails you want to make sure bypass spam filters and get to your inbox. There are a number of reasons a perfectly valid email can get flagged as spam but one of the most common is when people subscribe to a mailing list and don't remember it and flag incoming emails from that list as spam. Most spam filtering services rely on users to flag spam and then build a list of probable spam domains from that. The most common messages that inadvertently go to the spam folder are from internet marketers. You can avoid that very easily in GMail.

Here's how you do it:

Look for an email that you want to make sure ends up where you see it.

Determine either the email address (which narrows the filter) or domain (broadens the filter's results) in which you are interested (Figure 1 below).

Click on the "More Actions" button or on the "Create a Filter" link in the top of the email layout (Figure 1 below).

On the "Create a Filter" screen, add the domain or email address to the "From:" line (See Figure 2).

Make sure you test the filter before you save it (you can delete it later but it will cost you time).

Use the "Next Step" button to get to the final page.

Check the "Never send it to Spam" box (Figure 3 below).

If you want to apply the filter to messages you have received, check the "Also apply filter to..." box.

Click on the "Create Filter" button to save the filter

Whitelisting is pretty straightforward once you understand how filters work.

What Is An Addon Domain?

An Addon Domain is a domain name that is added to an account with a webhost that is not the one you signed up under originally. An Addon Domain functions in the same way any other domain. It gives us a way to refer to internet addresses in a way we (mere humans) can understand rather than having to resort to numeric addresses. In the example to the left, number 1 is the main domain while numbers 2 and 3 are Addon Domains.

The first thing you need to understand about domains* is that they can (and usually are) purchased separately from a hosting account. A single business or individual may have one or dozens of domains registered. A web hosting account may have several domains associated with it. One domain is listed as a master domain for accounting and service use when you signup for a hosting account and all the others associated with that account are referred to as addon domains. Software on the computer running the web server is able to distinguish between these domains and route visitors to them.

An Addon Domain can be setup from within your control panel**. The Addon Domain will appear as a totally separate domain from your primary domain. You can manage multiple domains in an account from the same control panel, however. You can assign  email addresses to the domain, create forwarders for those email addresses, and more the same way you do for your main domain on the account. Incoming traffic will not be able to distinguish between a regular domain and an Addon Domain when they visit your websites.

There are some things to be aware of when creating an Addon Domain:

there are no negative effects on SEO caused by Addon Domains unless you tie them to questionable sites or content,

an Addon Domain cannot have its own unique IP address***, it will always have the same IP as the primary domain,

you can create multiple domains/websites on the same web hosting account,

you can save money and web space by using one hosting account with Addon Domains instead of several hosting accounts,

the Addon Domain shares all the resources (disk space, bandwidth...) available to the main site,

the Addon Domain can be configured to have its own FTP manager, site stats and cgi-bin directory,

you can upload all pages, images, scripts, forums to your Addon Domain directory,

you can access your Addon Domain using several web site addresses depending on how your account is setup, such as,

http://www.ThisSite.com

http://www.ThisSite2.ThisSite.com

phttp://www.ThisSite.com/ThisSite2

you can promote several web sites within one hosting account with their own unique set of keywords,

Addon Domains are generally placed in subdirectories under what is called the site root****.

When choosing a web hosting service, be sure to ask if they allow add-on domains. This will give you  more flexibility to utilize your web hosting space should you need to create Addon Domains in the future. Some services allow you to have *unlimited* domains on a single account, but if you experience a surge in traffic, have too many databases in use, or fail to protect your siteagainst malware, your account may be limited or terminated. Since your account's main domain will share resources with Addon Domains you may get into a difficult position sooner than you may expect.

Once you setup a couple of Addon Domains, most of this will come easily to you. If you have questions, I encourage you to leave them in the comment section below.

Notes:

* A domain is the name you register for a website that is in a form that humans can readily identify.

** The term control panel refers to the software on the web server used to manage the files and databases associated with a single account. The most widely used are cPanel and Plesk.

*** The Internet Protocol(IP) address is a series of numbers used to identify places on the internet in a form similar to 345.67.347.912. In the case of a single user's account on a shared system, all of the user's sites have a shared IP address.

**** A site's root is where the files for the main domain reside.

Terms change and meanings expand to keep pace with these changes so it should not be surprising that even the basics get confusing. Here's a brief discussion of the differences between Landing Pages(LPs) and Squeeze Pages(SPs).

LPs are:

the page you want the consumer to land on after clicking on an ad or link from ads off your site,

LPs are typically either a sales page OR a presale page that leads from the place where your advertising is set up,

typically landing pages are designed to funnel the consumer to the action you want them to take,

LPs are mostly devoid of navigation and other links that can take visitors off the page,

LPs are most often association with Pay Per Click businesses but any ad you want to make the most of could/should go to a landing page (for instance you could have an email campaign that goes to a dedicated landing page),

LPs be one of many you set up to lead to an opt-in SP,

LPs, also referred to as gateway pages, are used extensively in the field of affiliate marketing with the primary role to pre-sell the site visitor on the product they will be shown on the next page,

LPs are generally not as ‘focused’ as squeeze pages - LPs commonly attempt to use various emotions the reader feels to more fully engage them in the content.

Squeeze Pages are:

created specifically to solicit opt-in email addresses from prospective subscribers,

or used to get the visitor to take one action, generally with some sort of gift in exchange for an email address or contact info,

the offer of a free gift in exchange for customer contact information is both common and expected on these type pages.

So the goal of a LP is usually to set up a sale whereas the SP goal is to get an email address or other contact information.

Does that make it more clearer or does anyone else have anything to add?

This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend WishList live in Las Vegas, Nevada. Unlike the event last year this one ran over a two day period. The first day was devoted to marketing and publicizing your membership site. The second day had two tracks that ran concurrently. One had to do with developing content, the other with development issues. I had the chance to attend the latter.

Overall I think the event was extremely well run. Every class started almost on time and the staff did an excellent job of herding cats and making sure everyone was at least moving to their seats when the classes were starting.

The first day was not as productive as I had hoped because many of the things covered in the morning were topics I have heard covered before. The afternoon sessions were better but I think the meat of the conference, for me at least, was contained in the second day. The list of speakers was pretty impressive on the that day and covered a lot of material that would be beneficial to anyone who was writing plugins or add ons for WishList Member.

There were a couple of interesting announcements. The first had to deal with the new API 2.0 that will be released in the coming months. I did not work with version 1.0 of the API, however those who had seemed to be looking forward to the new version. This will open up a great deal of the insides of WishList Member to developers. What this means in the long run is that more of the plugins developed to work with WishList Member will work more consistently and have less chance of conflicting with either WishList Member or other plugins. This will provide a much better user experience and broaden the base of WishList Member.

The second announcement had to deal with the developer's program and was probably the more exciting of the two for me. WishList Products will be running the a new certification program in 2011. The cost for this will stay around $1000, but for those of us who were already certified the price will only be around $300. We will get access to the new training and this will include more technical training on WishList. This in itself will be worth the $300!

The main code ninjas for WishList were present at the conference and gave a couple of the presentations. Michael Lopez is the main programmer and is based in the Philippines. He covered both version one of the API and highlighted the differences between that and the version 2.0 API. John Morris the main U.S. programmer was also there and was on a couple of the panels. They talked about how a lot of the code for WishList had been rewritten over the past year in an effort to make it more reliable and faster. The code is still protected in many places but the release of the new API will assist developers even more than opening up the code (because we all know how programmers like to tinker with the guts of any program to which they can gain access!)

The owners of the company felt very good about the long-term viability of WishList and its place in the market. Although there is some competition it does not seem too concern them unduly. I will try to post more of the specifics from the WishList conference as I review my notes.

I had a someone ask me how to download and edit Animoto Videos for use on their site. Before I show the video, I want to cover what Animoto's Terms of Service (ToS) are for personal and commercial use so no one decides to run me out of town on a rail.*

Animoto Personal Use -

The ToS are pretty clear on personal use. In essence, you can

download the videos you make,

use them on your personal site by storing them on your site,

or have Animoto host them and use their video player.

They do insist, however that if you store it on their site and use their code that you do not modify the video player or video in any way (such as removing their Animoto logo). Here's the section from the ToS:

You may share your Animoto Videos hosted on the website by using Animoto's video player code to play your video in your own personal website or web page. You may also share your Animoto video by downloading it to a storage device, personal computer, or mobile device. The Animoto Videos may only be used for personal, non-commercial, uses. You agree that you will not modify the video player code in any way, nor will you modify the display of your Animoto Video.

So if you want to use the video on a personal site and have Animoto store it, you may not change the way the player is displayed.

Animoto does retain some rights you may want to consider:

You hereby grant to Animoto a royalty-free, perpetual license to use, copy, create, modify, display and host your Animoto Video, Image Content, and Musical Content solely to the extent necessary for Animoto to provide the Services as described herein.

Animoto Commercial Use -

"Ay, there's the rub." The commercial restraints are more limited and if you have shallow pockets, they are pretty draconian. If you are a commercial user, you:

must buy a commercial license for your videos ($39.00 USD a month or $249.00 USD yearly),

must buy a license for each user (so if you and an employee do videos, you must have two licenses),

must have a commercial license if you produce and sell videos using Animoto's services to people who are using the videos commercially,

and the client must have a license for Animoto if you produce a video and they use it commercially.

If you are a videographer that sells videos to others for personal use, then you only require a license for you.

Now having said that, here's how you can download and Animoto video and make changes to it...

* This was a "quaint" tradition in the early 1800s where some unfortunate individual would be tarred and feathered (painful in and of itself) and then forced to straddle a railroad tie while people carried him/her out of town. This, of course, has nothing to do with Animoto!
